Exploring child care options

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) licenses child care centers and child care homes. Check out their Guide to Child Care in Texas It explains the different types of child care facilities, how each type is regulated and inspected, suggests questions to ask when considering different providers, and more.

The DFPS search tool will help you find licensed child care centers or homes you may want to consider. Each facility’s listing includes its inspection history, so you can see whether they’ve had problems complying with state regulations.

See the DFPS Frequently Asked Questions page for information about child care standards, including background checks, as well as helpful links.

Child care and the Americans with Disabilities Act

Almost all child care programs must follow Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and not discriminate against children with disabilities based on their disability. That means the child care program must give children (and adults) an equal opportunity to participate in their program and its services. Child care programs that are actually run by a religious institution, such as a church, synagogue, or mosque are exempt.

Child Protective Services (CPS)

CPS is the division within DFPS that investigates reports of abuse and neglect of children. CPS also places children in foster care and adoptive homes. You can also contact CPS if you are interested in becoming a foster parent.
